As Storm Eunice approaches, we’ve put together a quick checklist of how to prepare for the worst of the weather
Beforehand
- Keep doors and windows closed, and ensure large doors on garages and barns are secure
- Secure loose items such as ladders, wheelie bins, garden furniture or anything else that could be blown away
- Move vehicles away from trees, sheds and fences and park them in a garage if possible
While the storm is happening
- Stay indoors and keep informed on social media or your local radio station about weather conditions where you are
- If you need to go outside, try not to walk or shelter near power cables and trees
- If there is damage happening to your property then wait until the storm has passed before you go outside to make any repairs
- Do not drive unless your journey is really necessary
- If you do need to drive, then do so slowly and take extra care on exposed roads such as bridges, and find alternative routes if possible
- Don’t walk on the beach or park your car near the seafront as the waves and airborne sand and shingle can cause significant damage
Once the storm has passed
- Stay well away from any electrical/telephone cables that have been blown down or are hanging over roads and pavements
- Take care if walking near any walls, buildings and trees which may have been weakened
- Check that any vulnerable neighbours or relatives are safe and help them make arrangements for any repairs
We offer home and contents insurance which will provide you with protection to your physical building, such as walls and roof, and also covers the contents of your home. We have access to some of the UK’s leading insurers, so whatever it is you need to protect, we can find a policy which suits you. Once you have decided exactly what cover you need, we will work on your behalf to ensure that the correct cover limits are in place, and that you have the right policy for your property.
